When a child’s unique cognitive profile does not adequately match the demands of the environment, the brain’s ancient threat-response systems can begin to influence learning, behavior, emotional regulation and relationships.

This presentation explores the interaction among evolutionary biology, neuropsychology, prediction error, environmental demands and “goodness of fit.”

Participants will examine how these concepts can help professionals rethink the way neurodivergent children are diagnosed, evaluated and supported in educational and clinical settings.

A central theme of the presentation is understanding what happens when children perceive that they are unable to achieve success or status within their peer “tribe.” Their responses may take very different forms, including fighting, fleeing through anxiety or avoidance, or eventually freezing and giving up.

Understanding what lies beneath these behaviors can fundamentally change the way we intervene.
