What Is Dyslexia?

Definition

Dyslexia is a neurological language disorder that makes it challenging for a person to process and manipulate sounds. It is driven by anatomical differences in structure within specific brain regions impacting phonological processing (impacting phonics) and/or orthographic processing impacting the ease and speed with which one can recognize words.

Dyslexia can impact a person's overall ability to fluently recognize words, spell accurately, and decode new words properly.

Dyslexia is not correlated to intelligence or a visual issues, like commonly believed.

Like other learning disabilities, dyslexia is a spectrum disorder that varies in level of impact... ranging from mild, moderate, or severe (Hasbrouck, 2020).

With prescriptive & high-quality intervention, students can grow in confidence & self-esteem...conquering the difficulties dyslexia can bring.

Our Approach

At Child Provider Specialists, we take pride in offering systematic, explicit, and evidence-based intervention to help students grow! Rooted in the science of reading, structured Literacy ensures that students are directly taught how language works, progressing from the simplest concepts to more complex ones in a logical order, with continuous practice and formative assessment to meet individual student needs.

Signs Your Child May Benefit From An Assessment

Does Your Child...

Conclusion:

These may be signs your child could benefit from a screener or a comprehensive dyslexia assessment to identify root causes of reading difficulties.

Our qualified interventionists at CPS can help identify your child’s unique reading profile through assessments & connect results to develop tailored, structured literacy interventions, ensuring every child receives the support they need to succeed in reading and spelling, feel confident in their abilities, and flourish…both academically and emotionally.

Identifying Dyslexia: Comprehensive Assessments

Through The Dyslexia Center at CPS, we offer three levels of comprehensive assessments to accurately identify dyslexia using the gold-standard Tests of Dyslexia (TODM) from Western Psychological Services (WPS) and authors Nancy Mather, PhD, R. Steve McCallum, PhD, Sherry Mee Bell, PhD, Barbara J. Wendling, MA

Screener (TOD-S)

Provides a Dyslexia Risk Index (DRI) starting at age 5-adulthood to help determine if your student is at-risk for dyslexia/reading difficulties or if a more in-depth assessment would be beneficial for your student.

Cost: "CPS offers the TOD-S at no cost to parents.

Early (TOD-E)

Specifically designed to identify dyslexia early in students Grade K through Grade 2, who are not yet reading connected texts & examines a student's early sight word acquisition, phonics knowledge, basic reading skills, and phonological awareness skills.

Comprehensive (TOD-C):

Serves individuals from Grade 1 through adulthood, who are reading connected texts. The TOD-C identifies dyslexia and examines a student's overall reading and spelling skills, linguistic processing, and vocabulary and reasoning skills.

Why Early Identification Matters

Impact of Early Intervention:

Identifying dyslexia early and providing age-appropriate interventions promptly can dramatically impact a child’s growth and the way they view school or learning.

Once a student is identified for dyslexia or reading/writing/spelling difficulties, tailored intervention to a student’s individual profile is highly recommended.

Our Structured Literacy Intervention
